Key insights into university applications 2024–25

19 Mar 2025

AT the closing of applications for semester 1 of the 2024–25 admissions period, the Universities Admissions Centre (UAC) processed more than 74,500 undergraduate applications and made over 102,700 offers* through its centralised admissions service.

In addition to applying through UAC, many students also submitted applications directly to universities through UAC’s portals to maximise their chances of receiving an offer. An additional 130,000§ applications were processed, bringing the total number of applications to over 204,500.

UAC has now released a snapshot of application and offer data, providing insights into applicant demographics, including age, gender distribution and preferred fields of study. The data also highlights trends in offers made through UAC.

For example, the majority of NSW Year 12 applications and offers were for courses in the field of Society & Culture. For non-Year 12 applicants, the majority of applications and offers were for courses in the field of Health.

Across all applicants, Health remained the most sought-after field of study, with 25 per cent of applicants listing a Health-related course as their first preference.

Kim Paino, UAC’s Interim Managing Director, said ‘It’s always interesting to see what study areas are in demand from students, and one thing we’ve seen over the years is the persistence of Society & Culture and Health at the top of those lists. As well as indicating student demand, it’s also a reflection of the sheer number of courses available in those fields.’

More detailed application and offer statistics are available on UAC’s website.

Notes

*There are more offers made than there are applications because, while applicants can only receive one offer in each round, they can receive an offer in more than one round.

Centralised admissions figures do not include international applications.

UAC processes direct applications on behalf of Australian Catholic University, Australian College of Physical Education, Australian National University, CQUniversity, Macquarie University, University of New England, University of Newcastle, University of Tasmania, University of Technology Sydney, University of Wollongong, UNSW Sydney and Western Sydney University.

§ Portal figures include international and postgraduate applicants. Applicants may apply directly through UAC portals to several universities, so this figure is not the count of unique applicants, but the total number of applications received. These applications may be for courses commencing in 2024 or 2025.
