General admission requirements

As an international student you will generally be selected on the basis of your performance in one of the following completed in 2023 (ie your ATAR or equivalent):

an Australian Year 12 qualification (either outside or in Australia)
an International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
a New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3.

ANU may take any or all of your qualifications or attempts at study into account.

International applicants applying for admission on the basis of qualifications other than those listed above must apply directly to the University, not through UAC.

Additional selection criteria

Some courses select applicants based on additional selection criteria such as a personal statement, a questionnaire, a portfolio of work, an audition, an interview or a test. Other courses may use a combination of both academic qualifications and additional selection criteria. Additional selection criteria can be found in the course descriptions available through the UAC course search.

Fees

International students are required to pay full tuition fees (International Student Fees – ISF) and are not subsidised by the Australian Government. If you are offered a place at ANU you must pay a deposit before you can be issued with an Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) for use in your student visa application process. The deposit of A$20,000 will contribute to your tuition fee and the applicable Overseas Student Health Cover insurance premium.

Students are also required to pay a Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF). The SSAFs for 2024 are:

full-time students – $351.00 annually
part-time students – $175.50 annually.

Your stay in Australia

It is a requirement of the Department of Home Affairs that prospective international students can demonstrate that they have sufficient funds while living in Australia.

Living costs include items such as:

accommodation (including rental bond)
electricity and/or gas
entertainment
food
personal and household items
telephone and internet bills
transport (bus/train).

Living expenses in Australia

During your stay in Australia you are permitted to work for up to 40 hours per fortnight during teaching periods, and unlimited hours outside teaching periods. Certain categories of voluntary, unpaid work is included in this total, and work undertaken as part of your course is not included.

You should not rely on working to fund your tuition or living expenses while in Australia as work cannot be guaranteed and spending excessive amounts of time working may adversely affect your studies.

Applications for work visas can only be submitted after you have arrived in Australia and started your classes. The Department of Home Affairs determines work entitlement for students.

Life as a student is much more than just attending classes and there are many other things to do that can help make your time at ANU a worthwhile experience, including playing sport, joining clubs and societies, participating in social activities, or volunteering.

ANU student events

Before you are granted a student visa, the Australian Government must be satisfied that you have appropriate accommodation, support and general welfare arrangements in place for the period that you will be under 18 years of age while in Australia. These arrangements must be finalised before visa application documentation can be issued.

The acceptable living arrangements for international students under the age of 18 are informed by Part D Standard 5 of the National Code, which requires that:

students aged under 18 must have appropriate accommodation and welfare arrangements in place prior to applying for a student visa
the arrangements must be approved by the University
the arrangements must remain in place for the duration of the period of enrolment plus seven days or until the student turns 18
students must turn 18 by 30 November of the calendar year that they start their program.

ANU offers a full range of student support services including advice on accommodation options and settling into life in Australia’s capital. ANU can also refer you to other services that you may need and provide you with a later-year student mentor.

ANU international student support

Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) is insurance for international students to help them with the costs of medical and hospital care they may require while they are in Australia. OSHC does not cover dental treatment. ANU’s preferred provider is Allianz Care Australia.

The Australian Government requires all international students on a student visa and their dependants to purchase an approved policy from an Australian registered health fund for the duration of their visas. OSHC is not included in tuition fees.
