About

The Bachelor of Public Health is a dynamic degree that prepares students to improve health outcomes for individuals and communities through a blend of professional, scientific, and social health perspectives. Graduates develop the skills to work in advocacy, research, education, policy, and planning, addressing health inequities and enhancing healthcare services across diverse populations

Students can choose majors including health promotion, global health, Indigenous health, or population health, gaining expertise in both scientific principles and public health practice. Those interested in clinical pathways can major in human structure and function, providing a strong foundation for postgraduate study in physiotherapy, orthoptics, speech pathology, or other allied health fields. A flexible major option also allows students to tailor their studies to their interests.

This degree opens opportunities in government, non-government organisations, and the health sector, with careers in health education, project management, research, and policy. Students who major in health promotion can also become accredited health promotion practitioners.

Areas of study

Students can tailor choices to suit their needs from subject areas such as public health, health promotion, social determinants of health, Indigenous health, contemporary health issues, health systems, health policy, data analytics, epidemiology, biostatistics, global health, human structure and function, health project management, health and the environment, psychosocial health, digital health, communication, health advocacy, and sport and exercise. Students can also add electives from other faculties and schools, including business and management, Indigenous studies, and transdisciplinary studies.

Career opportunities

Community development officer, epidemiologist, health educator, Indigenous health officer, health information manager, health promotion officer, environmental health officer, health service planner, policymaker, project manager, public health advocate, public health consultant, or researcher. There are also opportunities in the private sector, such as health providers, insurance companies, pharmaceutical companies, and data analytics. This course also provides a pathway to graduate entry health degrees such as physiotherapy, speech pathology and orthoptics.
