The Bachelor of Midwifery course is a three-year full-time course consisting of both theoretical and practical clinical components This course was the first Bachelor of Midwifery to be introduced in NSW. It provides the opportunity to apply for registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia without having to become a registered nurse beforehand.

Career options include practising midwifery in hospitals, community settings (such as a Birth Centre or woman’s home), public and private settings in metropolitan and rural areas. Career progression opportunities include midwifery education management and research, and consultancy roles such as lactation or policy development. Midwifery is a career that also fosters an individual’s ability to engage in advocacy providing midwives with opportunities to work in the global human rights and reproductive health space.
Provides eligibility to apply for registration as a midwife with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia.
This course includes extensive midwifery clinical practice, which is a compulsory component. Students commence midwifery professional experience in the clinical setting in first year and this continues into second and third year. Students undertake midwifery professional experience in allocated area health service facilities. Clinical placements occur in blocks and across each session, of the academic year and are in addition to time spent in the midwifery clinical practice laboratories that simulate the clinical environment. The placements involve morning, evening and night shifts and being on call for births in continuity of care models.
Over the duration of the course, students are also required to follow up to twenty women throughout their pregnancy, birth and the period after birth. This program also requires students to be on-call to attend the women's labour and birth. Students in the final year of their program undertake a prolonged period of clinical experience with much of their time spent in a clinical environment. Students also have the opportunity to complete a rural and remote placement and/or placements with privately practicing midwives in the community..
Students must meet all the requirements for clinical placements set out in Special requirements and policies. Students will be asked to provide evidence of their immunity or vaccination status. Screening for tuberculosis (TB) status may also be required prior to the commencement of the first clinical placement. Students who do not meet the requirements of the policy cannot commence the placement In accordance with NSW Health policy. All students are required to have an up-to-date COVID vaccination prior to commencing their clinical placement and receive their annual flu vaccination. Students are also required to undertake a police check.
Available to eligible students with an additional year of full-time study, or two years of part-time study.
