About

The professionally recognised music education program will prepare you for a career as a music teacher in both primary and secondary schools. You will develop music teaching skills through studies in curriculum, educational psychology, key ideas and approaches to music education, choral and instrumental pedagogy and music technology. Cultural diversity (including the study of Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islands music) and field-based experience are central to the program, and professional experience placements in schools play a vital part in each student's development.

Areas of study

Music education, plus principal study in either composition, contemporary music practice, musicology, or performance. Studies are also undertaken in analysis, history and cultural studies, and music skills (aural perception, harmony and analysis).

Career opportunities

Primary or secondary classroom teacher, chamber musician, concert soloist, conductor, education officer with a music performance/development organisation orchestral, musician, private music teacher or studio music teacher.

Professional recognition

Accredited by the NSW Education Standards Authority as an Initial Teacher Education Program.

Practical experience

Includes individual instrumental lessons and concert practice, large ensemble performance and practice teaching programs.

Essential requirements for admission

Audition or portfolio/interview: In addition to the UAC application, you must register for an audition/portfolio submission directly to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. Selection into the Conservatorium degrees is by audition and/or portfolio and/or interview, and ATAR. If specialising in Performance, applicants will be required to audition in instrument / voice. If specialising in Composition, Contemporary Music Practice or Musicology, applicants submit a portfolio and be interviewed.

Prerequisites

Band 5 in three HSC subjects or interstate equivalent, one of which needs to be English (English Standard or English Advanced or ESL (English as a Second Language)/EALD (English as an Additional Language or Dialect).

Audition application: In addition to your UAC application, a separate application to audition/interview must be submitted online directly to the Sydney Conservatorium of Music. A non-refundable administration fee is charged for all applications.
