The Bachelor of Arts (Extended) is a four-year degree for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students to undertake studies in an academically and culturally supported environment. The degree will equip you with communication, critical and analytical skills as well as provide you with an opportunity to make connections between in-depth study of a discipline area in humanities and social sciences, and knowledge of culture and practice.
Offering broad choice across subject areas in the humanities and social sciences and access to a full range of subjects from across the University, this degree is your first step towards a career in the arts, or as preparation for other specialised degrees at the University.
You will begin study with a cohort of students engaged in culturally relevant literacy and mathematics studies and other available units.
You will choose a major and a minor from the humanities and social sciences, or from the University's shared pool.
Throughout the degree you will have access to tailored academic support and tutors, mentors through our Mentoring our Brothers and Sisters (MOBS) program. You will also have access to opportunities including internships, study abroad and projects and placements in Community and industry.
Areas of study
You will complete foundation units in academic studies and numeracy, an Indigenous Cultural Capstone Project, a major from 513200 Bachelor of Arts Table A, another major, or a minor from Table A or S, units from the Open Learning Environment and electives.

Depending on majors: archaeologist, art historian, administrator/manager, editor, historian, heritage specialist, foreign affairs and trade officer, government policy officer, information specialist, journalist, museum/gallery curator, language specialist, media and communications officer, publisher, researcher, sociologist.
Fees and charges
The Australian Government provides funds for student travel and accommodation for first year where eligibility requirements are met. The Australian Government subsidises the tuition fee for this course. The remaining balance is paid by the student. Current University of Sydney fee information.7
Essential requirements for admission
Entry to the Bachelor of Arts (Extended) is only open to Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander students. Admission to this course will be based on readiness for tertiary study as demonstrated by:
- a numeracy and literacy diagnostic assessment;
- a structured interview;
- a secondary school leaving qualification, or Record of Student Achievement (RoSA), or tertiary study or an approved preparation program; and
- a portfolio of written work or support material including a personal statement of intent for studying the course.
