The Nuclear and Space Radiation Technology major will teach you the fundamental skills and knowledge necessary for a successful career in the emerging nuclear radiation or space radiation employment sectors emerging in Australia or globally.
A focus is given to radiation effects on humans and electronics in space or on Earth. Employment areas include health physicists, radiation protection officers and radiation safety experts, nuclear experts, single event effect scientists/engineers.
Your subjects include major practical components to complement and reinforce what you learn in lectures, and ensure you gain hands-on skills that prepare for real-world activities in your future careers. You will learn from academics that are internationally recognised in many fields of physics research including space and medical radiation physics, space and nuclear radiation effects, thermodynamics, quantum mechanics, nuclear detection and remote sensing.
The University of Wollongong collaborates widely with Australian and international atmospheric science communities including other universities, CSIRO, ANSTO, the Bureau of Meteorology, federal and state government departments and international networks.
Many physicists at UOW work under the aegis of the Institute for Superconducting and Electronic Materials (ISEM). ISEM is recognised as a flagship research strength of UOW.
The Department operates a 0.4m telescope equipped with modern electronic cameras and photometers and collaborates with the Illawarra Science Space in developing an astronomy teaching degree.

This new major is seeking accreditation with the Australian Institute of Physics.
Students will have access to modern purpose-built teaching and research facilities including the new Laser Radiation Testing Facility. Many subjects include on-site visits and guest lecturers. As well as opportunities for optional research internships.
Available as an additional year of study to meritorious students
Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Advanced, any 2 units of science.
Recommended studies: Chemistry, Mathematics Extension 1, Physics.
Students with a limited background in physics or chemistry are advised to enrol in bridging courses held in February each year.
