Marine Science is the study of oceanographic processes, marine life and governance in the ocean. Marine scientists investigate the physical and biological nature of oceans, their impact on human society, and their conservation and environmental management.
The Bachelor of Marine Science takes advantage of the diverse NSW South Coast environment, which is an ideal location to undertake specialist marine training. This setting provides substantial fieldwork opportunities in addition to the extensive laboratory-based learning you will undertake during the course.
Learn how to understand, observe and define oceanographic and coastal processes, the biodiversity of oceans, and ocean governance and management. Use emerging technologies in marine science and be trained in important skills necessary for the workplace.
You will study a combination of common core science subjects and focused fundamental subjects key to your understanding of marine science, including biodiversity, ecology, evolution, oceanography, sedimentology, coastal processes, geospatial analysis, environmental management, ocean policy and more.
On completion, high-performing students considering further study or a career in research should consider the Honours degree in Marine Science. This one-year degree offers students a pathway to expand their knowledge in marine science and achieve their research aspirations.
Biology, chemistry, coastal processes, earth and environmental sciences, fisheries and aquaculture, freshwater biodiversity, global challenges in science, marine and freshwater biodiversity, marine ecology, marine policy and governance, oceanography.
Coastal oceanographer, environmental advisor/specialist, fisheries officer, hydrographic Surveyor, marine park ranger, marine scientist, marine support officer, marine restorations, research scientist.
Graduates qualify to apply for membership of relevant professional societies, such as the Australian Marine Sciences Association.
The Bachelor of Marine Science incorporates field and laboratory studies at all levels, providing extensive opportunities for hands-on learning. You will spend about half of your course hours in laboratories or out in the field - in coastal, freshwater, bushland and geologically diverse environments. This allows you to gain a deeper understanding of the theory and develop your practical skills which provides a solid foundation for your career in Marine Science.
Available as an additional year of study to meritorious students.
Assumed knowledge: Any 2 units of English, Mathematics Advanced, any 2 units of science. Students without at least Mathematics Advanced (Band 4) must pass an approved mathematics subject during their degree.
Recommended studies: Any 4 units of science.
