Computer and Autonomous Systems Engineers design computer hardware and systems. Their work is utilised in any industry where computer and autonomous systems are prevalent, such as driverless cars, Artificial Intelligence Systems, medical equipment, automotive and transport sector, and service delivery and design of personal electronic devices and Internet of Things.
In your first year of study, you will learn more about engineering and its various fields. From your second year, you also have the option to complete a double major, combining Computer and Autonomous Systems Engineering with Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
The later years focus on the development of high-level computer engineering capabilities including Hardware Design, Software Design, Signal Processing, Multimedia Control Systems and Robotics, and Autonomous Systems.
Your degree also includes 12-weeks hands-on industry experience, either in Australia or overseas, as well as a range of industry projects and other career-ready learning opportunities.
The first year provides you with sound fundamentals in mathematics, statistics, physics, computing, engineering science and communication, mechanics and materials.
You then focus on your computer and autonomous systems engineering major from second year and will study electrical engineering, software design and hardware-software integration, from the development of super computers to circuit design.
The later years of the computer and autonomous engineering major focus on the development of high-level computer engineering capabilities, including hardware design, software techniques, signal processing, and multimedia control systems and robotics.
Autonomous systems engineer, control systems engineer, data analyst, electrical engineer, electronics engineer, information system engineer, power systems engineer, railway signaling engineer, power generation engineer, software engineer, telecommunications network engineer, test engineer.
UOW’s engineering programs are accredited by Engineers Australia and relevant world engineering bodies through the Washington Accord. This ensures recognition by equivalent professional engineering bodies in the USA, UK, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries.
This recognition ensures that graduates from this course are admitted, on application, to the grade of Graduate Membership of Engineers Australia.
12 weeks of industry experience in one or more settings under the supervision of experienced engineers; optional internships, industry projects and other career-ready learning opportunities.
In the final stages of the course, students undertake a research component (thesis).
Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Advanced, any 2 units of English.
Recommended studies: Engineering Studies, Mathematics Extension 1, Physics.
Bridging courses in Physics are held in February each year.
