Mechatronic engineering is the combination of mechanical, electrical and computer technologies. Industrial robots are a famous example of mechatronic engineering: computer-controlled mechanical arms capable of performing manual labour with greater strength, speed and efficiency than a human.
The reality is computer control of systems is so commonplace in homes, business and industry that nearly everyone uses a mechatronic system every day, from washing machines to central air-conditioning, cameras and computer printers.
A Mechatronic engineer's skill for combining and refining elements to improve the whole makes them valuable in fields such as digital electronics, manufacturing, information technology and robotics.
The first year of study allows you to learn more about engineering and its various fields. From your second year, you will focus on your chosen major. In your third and fourth year of the major you will branch into more specialised areas including: control theory, microcontroller architecture and applications, electronics, mechanical engineering design, foundation in electrical energy utilisation, robotics and flexible automation.
Your degree also includes 12-weeks hands-on industry experience, either in Australia or overseas, as well as a range of industry projects and other career-ready learning opportunities.
The first year provides you with sound fundamentals in mathematics, statistics, physics, computing, engineering science and communication, mechanics and materials. You then focus on your mechatronic engineering major from second year.
In your third and fourth year of the major you will branch into more specialised areas, including control theory, microcontroller architecture and applications, electronics, mechanical engineering design, foundation in electrical energy utilisation, robotics, and flexible automation.
Automation and control engineer, control system engineer, mechatronic design engineer, mechatronics engineer, project engineer, robotics and additive fabrication engineer, systems engineer, service engineer.
UOW’s engineering programs are accredited by Engineers Australia and relevant world engineering bodies through the Washington Accord. This ensures recognition by equivalent professional engineering bodies in the USA, UK, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries.
This recognition ensures that graduates from this course are admitted, on application, to the grade of Graduate Membership of Engineers Australia.
12 weeks of industry experience in one or more settings under the supervision of experienced engineers; optional internships, industry projects and other career-ready learning opportunities.
In the final stages of the course, students undertake a research component (thesis).
Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Advanced, any 2 units of English.
Recommended studies: Engineering Studies, Mathematics Extension 1, Physics.
Bridging courses in Physics are held in February each year.
