Bachelor of Arts (Psychology)

Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those affecting behaviour. Psychology is about understanding who we are and how we think, feel, act and change. This knowledge helps us improve wellbeing and psychological health for people across a range of social and cultural contexts.  

The Bachelor of Arts (Psychology) is the first stage of qualification required to work as a professional psychologist. This degree alone will not qualify you to be a practicing psychologist, rather it provides comprehensive, foundational knowledge in the processes basic to human psychological functioning. 

Subjects include biological and social bases of behaviour, cognition and perception, social and developmental psychology, personality, and applied psychology. You will also learn the fundamentals of psychological practice, including the history of psychology, statistical and quantitative methods, and psychological assessment. 

You can also combine your psychology major with other disciplines available in the Bachelor of Arts degree allowing you to expand your understanding of the human experience and broaden your career options. 

Students with an excellent academic record may apply to transfer to the four-year Bachelor of Psychology (Honours) degree, which provides eligibility for provisional registration by Psychology Board of Australia, and a pathway to further study to become a psychologist. 

Areas of study

Applied psychology, biological and social bases of behaviour, cognition and perception, personality, social and developmental psychology. You will also learn the fundamentals of psychological practice, including the history of psychology, statistical and quantitative methods, and psychological assessment.

Career opportunities

Drug and alcohol counselling, health education, human resource management, industrial relations, market and social research. A career as a primary teacher is possible with the addition of the Master of Teaching.

Professional recognition

Accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council. Students must complete an additional honours year to meet the academic requirements for eligibility for provisional registration as a psychologist. Further postgraduate study and training is required for full accreditation.

Available as an additional year of study to meritorious students. Entry is competitive.
