Build the skills and knowledge to apply engineering techniques to problems in physical rehabilitation and biomedical technologies when you study Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) – Bachelor of Exercise Science at UOW. You will gain a unique understanding of both engineering and the anatomical and physiological basis of human motion and biomechanics. You will learn how to research and design groundbreaking orthopedic devices as you study rehabilitation engineering.
Understand the development of prostheses like artificial limbs or electronically controlled wheelchairs as you study the development of biomaterials. Look at the effect of exercise on human performance as you learn to design, implement and evaluate exercise and physical activity for a wide range of people within the community. On completion, you will possess the skills to address these challenges and provide programs for improving general health, the prevention of chronic diseases, health promotion and enhanced sports performance.
You will benefit from faculty members who are driving cutting-edge research, providing innovative solutions to global issues. You will learn core fundamentals in your first year of both degrees before deciding which major discipline to focus on from the second year. You will work in well-designed laboratories and workshops essential to the development of exercise science understanding engineering skills as you complete an effective experimental program. You will complete an engineering industry placement where you may gain credit for relevant work experience, either in Australia or overseas, by participating in our Professional Options Program. Our engineering degree includes honours-level content integrated into the course. Throughout this double degree, you will have the opportunity to gain real-world experience and make professional connections.
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours): Chemistry, communication, computing, engineering science, materials, mathematics, mechanical or mechatronic engineering, mechanics, physics, statistics. Bachelor of Exercise Science: Biomechanics, exercise physiology, exercise prescription, functional anatomy, human anatomy and physiology.
Biomedical engineer, biotechnologist, medical device manufacturer, medical sales, hospitals (servicing and optimising equipment), rehabilitation technologist, prosthetist, physiologist, sports administrator, rehabilitation specialist, sports scientist.
Bachelor of Engineering (Honours): UOW’s engineering programs are accredited by Engineers Australia and relevant world engineering bodies through the Washington Accord. This ensures recognition by equivalent professional engineering bodies in the USA, UK, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries. This recognition ensures that graduates from this course are admitted, on application, to the grade of Graduate Membership of Engineers Australia. Bachelor of Exercise Science: Graduates are eligible to apply for accreditation as exercise scientists with Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA).
Compulsory 12 weeks of industry experience in one or more settings under the supervision of experienced engineers; optional internships, industry projects and other career-ready learning opportunities. In addition you will complete 140 hours of compulsory practicum experience as part of the Exercise Science stream.
In the final stages of the course, students undertake a research component (thesis).
Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Advanced, any 2 units of English.
Recommended studies: Engineering Studies, Mathematics Extension 1, Physics, Chemistry (Chemistry not necessary for biomedical, computer, electrical, mechatronic or telecommunications engineering). Bridging courses in Physics and Chemistry are offered in February each year.
