Surveyors are specialists in measuring, managing, analysing, and displaying spatial information about the Earth and its physical features. As custodians of the cadastre (land titling system), they play a vital role in various economic aspects. The work of surveyors spans local and global projects, including preparing for new infrastructure developments and mapping flood areas for disaster preparedness.
The Associate Degree in Surveying provides students with a comprehensive surveying-focused education to prepare for various roles in the field. The program includes foundational courses in surveying principles, mathematics, and engineering law, and offers flexibility to choose elective pathways tailored to your career goals. You will explore advanced topics such as satellite positioning, photogrammetry, land boundary definition, and town planning. The program emphasises practical training, theoretical learning, and hands on learning experiences to ensure graduates are equipped to tackle complex challenges and drive innovation in the surveying field.
The Associate Degree in Surveying provides you with a level 6 Associate Degree qualification, with the opportunity to progress into the Bachelor of Surveying (Honours) to become a registered surveyor.
Cadastral surveying, construction surveying, legal systems and processes for land management, modern surveying methods and equipment, photogrammetry and laser scanning, spatial data systems and remote sensing, and surveying techniques and computations.
Surveyors assist in the planning of almost all development and mapping of the land and earth. A shortage of surveyors in Australia has led to high demand for graduates. This program will prepare you with the knowledge and practical skills for a range of surveying positions. These positions may include a building surveyor, cartographer, engineering surveyor town planning, geospatial specialist, land surveyor or a photogrammetrist.
All University of Newcastle surveying students complete 12 weeks of industrial experience during their degree. Through your work placement, you’ll build important professional networks and put your learning into practice.
Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Advanced (Band 5). Applicants who have achieved less than Band 5 may need additional study and/or assistance to successfully complete the mathematics requirement of the program.
Recommended studies: Mathematics Extension 1 or higher, any 2 units of Science.
If you have not previously studied one or more of these subjects or have limited knowledge in them, we strongly encourage you to consider enrolling in bridging courses.
