About

This degree is the flagship program of the virtual Newcastle International Hotel School in the Newcastle Business School. You can study the Bachelor of Tourism, Hospitality and Events as a stand-alone degree; or combine your university degree with an Advanced Diploma at TAFE NSW, to graduate with two qualifications in just three years.

Students selecting the latter option, will study courses at both the University of Newcastle and TAFE NSW for the first 18 months, and then study full-time at the University of Newcastle for the final 18 months. This option allows students to finish their TAFE NSW Advanced Diploma in the first 18 months of the three-year program, to fast-track employability in the visitor economy.

Destination marketing, event leadership, leisure behaviour, managing volunteers, service scapes design, tourism and cultural heritage, tourism strategy, tourism and sustainability.

Career opportunities

This program offers strong career outcomes in a range of areas such as destination management and marketing, event and festival management, accommodation, and hospitality and customer service. On completion of this degree, you’ll be able to work in roles such as visitor experience director, festival director, corporate events manager, guest relations manager and director of hospitality services.

The Tourism Discipline is a member of the Council for Australasian Tourism, Hospitality and Events Education (CATUHE) and the Tourism Education Futures Initiative (TEFI).

Practical experience

You will complete 140 hours - of supervised work placement within your final year of study to enable you to apply knowledge developed throughout your studies and acquire new skills and professional networks to support your career readiness. This professional experience course provides an opportunity for you to undertake workplace experience in your desired career field, in either tourism, hospitality or events management.

International work placement and cultural immersion study opportunities in countries such as China, Hong Kong, Singapore, France, Samoa, and Fiji.

Honours

Honours in Tourism is available to students as a separate program with a duration of one year full-time (or part-time equivalent). Entry requirements apply.

Admission criteria

Applicants with recent secondary education

Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Standard or higher, English Standard or higher.

Applicants with higher education study

If you have completed or partially completed higher education studies, your grade point average can be converted into a selection rank for admission into our undergraduate programs.

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study

If you completed or partially completed competency-based vocational education and training (such as TAFE, a private Registered Training Provider, or vocational studies undertaken in high school), this can be used to determine your eligibility for admission.

If you have studied or intend to study one of the following Advanced Diplomas concurrently with this program, you will receive the following credit:

  • Students enrolled in the Advanced Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management or Advanced Diploma of Hospitality Management will be granted 40 units of core course credit and 50 units of elective course credit at the 2000 level.
  • TAFE Advanced Diploma of Event Management students will be awarded 30 units of core course credit and 60 units of elective course credit at the 2000 level.
