As a medical engineer, you’ll strive to make medical treatment more effective, efficient, safer and affordable. You will be uniquely placed to save and improve lives.
Medical engineering is a new and exciting discipline. It spans topics like medicine, biomedical science and engineering. The Bachelor of Medical Engineering graduates take technology and create better solutions for health and wellbeing. They seek to improve human health through the development and design of equipment, devices, computer systems and software.
You’ll use your creativity, critical thinking, and complex problem-solving skills. Learn to apply engineering principles and design processes. Find innovative solutions to healthcare problems. As a graduate, you will develop and improve technology and human systems in medical settings.
Major in: Medical biomechanics or medical devices. You will also take courses in analog and digital communications, engineering design, human pathophysiology, neurobiology, programming and computing, and pharmacology.
Elective pathways: All University of Newcastle Engineering (Honours) programs facilitate the study of a wide range of elective pathways to customise our students' learning experience. These can deepen or broaden the knowledge base of the core program, depending on the student's desires and interests.
Depending on your area of specialisation, you could work with biomechanical devices, surgical equipment, nanotechnology drugs and tests, prosthetic limbs, artificial organs, electrical and computing systems for radiotherapy, respiration or dialysis, digital medical records, and app-based health detection and diagnostics tools.
The University of Newcastle is one of only three Australian member institutions of the Global Engineering Education Exchange Program (Global e3).
The Bachelor of Medical Engineering (Honours) is provisionally accredited with Engineers Australia.
All University of Newcastle engineering students must complete 12 weeks of professional practice during their degree. complete 12 weeks of industrial experience during their degree. Through your work placement, you’ll build important professional networks and put your learning into practice.
All graduates will be awarded Bachelor of Medical Engineering (Honours), with graded honours awarded based on merit.
Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Advanced (Band 5 or above). Applicants who achieve less than Band 5 may need additional study or assistance to successfully complete the mathematics requirement of the program.
Recommended studies: Mathematics Extension 1 or higher, any 2 units of science.

If you have completed or partially completed higher education studies, your grade point average can be converted into a selection rank for admission into our undergraduate programs.
If you completed or partially completed competency-based vocational education and training (such as TAFE, a private Registered Training Provider, or vocational studies undertaken in high school), this can be used to determine your eligibility for admission.
Completion of studies at an AQF Level 4 (Cert IV) or higher Guarantees Entry into many of our undergraduate programs.
