The need for environmentally sustainable and equitable development is one of the most serious issues facing the contemporary world. Development Studies provides you with the opportunity to study the causes and consequences of uneven development and assess policy options for a more equitable and sustainable future. Social science provides you with the opportunity to analyse, challenge and gain insight into theories about life cycle, gender, class, race, work, social justice and social organisation.
The combined program offers an interdisciplinary understanding of uneven development through the Bachelor of Development Studies with a grounding in social science theory and practice from the Bachelor of Social Science. This combined degree is highly structured, comprising of core courses and several major pathways. Note: Not all majors in the Bachelor of Social Science are available in the combined degree.

Development studies places a strong focus on both field trips and work placement. Your fieldwork will give you the opportunity to develop research skills that values Indigenous knowledge of the local environment that can then inform the development of plans, strategies and policy in culturally appropriate ways. Students can choose to develop their expertise in community development with placement as part of their degree. Every major has a course available that includes a 140-hour placement with relevant industry partners. The opportunity for a global experience is also available with international work placement options.
