About

The Bachelor of Midwifery develops skills, knowledge and experience to provide high-quality care through safe and effective midwifery practice in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council Midwife standards for practice. Study areas include anatomy and physiology, midwifery theory and practice, primary healthcare, women’s health, mental health and psychosocial sciences.

As an essential member of multi-disciplinary teams, graduates will have the skills and abilities to work in partnership with women to contribute to healthier outcomes for mothers and babies. Teaching facilities include electronic resources, medical technology, bioscience laboratories and midwifery birth suites with the latest technology, highly specialised equipment and anatomical simulation models.

Career opportunities

Registered midwife or clinical midwifery consultant in public and private hospitals, community maternity and neonatal healthcare settings; group practice midwife, clinical midwifery consultant, midwifery educator, midwifery unit manager, independent midwife (with further training); in Australia and in New Zealand.

Professional recognition

Approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, accredited by the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council.

Practical experience

Approximately 1,000 hours of supervised placements to experience the full scope of midwifery practice by providing care for women throughout their pregnancies, and during childbirth and the postnatal period.

Applicants with recent secondary education

Assumed knowledge: Any 2 units of English, any 2 units of Mathematics plus Chemistry or Biology.

Recommended studies: English Extension 1 or English Extension 2.
