About

The World Health Organization defines public health as the art and science of preventing disease, prolonging life and promoting health through the organised efforts of society. You’ll develop the knowledge and skills needed to make a valuable contribution to society in this high demand area. You’ll learn how to address major health issues including chronic disease, sexual health, under- and over-nutrition, HIV/AIDs, physical inactivity, and drug and alcohol abuse, in settings such as workplaces, hospitals and schools. In the final year, you’ll put your studies into practice through professional placements in public health organisations.

Areas of study

Public health, hygiene, disease, and injury prevention.

Career opportunities

You will be qualified to work as a public health officer or a health promotion officer, tackling our most pressing health issues. You may find work in government departments and agencies, health centres, schools and childcare centres, and community organisations.

Professional recognition

Students and graduates are eligible to apply for membership of the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) and the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA).

Practical experience

Students must undertake placements. A health check including immunisation status, a Suitability Card and national police records check are required. Visit the Griffith University website for professional practice requirements.

ATAR-based offers only (semester 1, 2024)

Use all ATAR profile data as a guide only; it provides a broad overview of the ATARs and selection ranks of previous Year 12 students admitted into that course. 1. This ATAR profile table is in line with Commonwealth Government transparency requirements. It is based on offers to recent school leavers (ie completed Year 12 in the last 2 years) who were selected solely or partly on their ATAR. Note that some institutions further differentiate this information on their websites.
  2. The ATAR values exclude any adjustment factors.
  3. The selection ranks include the ATAR and any adjustment factors.
