About

Students rank Avondale’s Bachelor of Nursing* as #1 in Australia for quality of teaching, learning resources, student satisfaction and skills development. You’ll love it here too.

With our Sydney campus located on the grounds of the biggest private hospital in NSW, when you study Nursing at Avondale, you will learn in state-of-the-art facilities and in hospital ward-like simulation centres, gain experience in a diverse range of healthcare organisations through 800 hours of clinical placements, and have the option to complete the first year of study at our Sydney or Lake Macquarie campuses.

The course will help you become a capable registered nurse who can provide the best care to patients. There is high demand for registered nurses in the health care system in public, private and community settings with employment opportunities in local, national and international healthcare environments.

Areas of study

Nursing.

Career opportunities

Nursing in medical, surgical or critical care, maternal or paediatric health, mental health, gynaecological/women's health, international hospitals and communities, aged care and community health, perioperative/operating theatre, health related industries such as medical products and services, education, administration and management.

As a registered nurse, you will have the opportunity to diversify into other health areas and/or specialise in a particular area.

Practical experience

From the second semester of the first year of the BNurs course, students will participate in compulsory clinical placements each semester. The content of each clinical unit is related to the areas being studied in corresponding theoretical units. Some clinical placements are provided in cooperation with the Sydney Adventist Hospital, but there are also many other placements available in local and regional hospitals, mental health facilities, paediatric units, and at aged care and community facilities.

In order to maximise clinical learning, there is a need for students to travel off campus and make their own way to various clinical learning venues.

To participate in clinical placements, students will need to comply with the NSW Health Vaccination policy and successfully complete a Fitness to Practice Declaration.

Clinical placements go for periods of a few days to four weeks at a time, with the course requiring the completion of a total of 800 hours of placement throughout the degree.

The following units have clinical placements or service requirements as part of the requirements to pass the units:

  • NURS11102 Nursing Practice 2 - 80 hours
  • NURS22203 Nursing Practice 3 - 80 hours
  • NURS22205 Nursing the Older Person - 80 hours
