The Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) (PhB) allows intellectually ambitious students to explore their interests and develop their research skills. The four-year PhB course is designed with flexibility in mind – each PhB course is as individual as the student taking it. Students will tailor a stimulating and challenging course with an academic mentor. In the honours year, students undertake a research project under the guidance of an academic supervisor.
Joint degrees: Bachelor of Philosophy (Honours) – Science is also offered as a joint course with the National University of Singapore (NUS). Students spend five semesters at ANU, including their fourth year, and three semesters at NUS.
For Humanities and Social Sciences: Anthropology, Arabic, Archaeology, Asian and Pacific anthropology, Asian and Pacific linguistics, Asian and Pacific literature and film, Asian history, Asia-Pacific archaeology, Asia-Pacific international relations, Asia-Pacific politics, Asia-Pacific security studies, Burmese, Chinese, French language and culture, Hindi, India studies, Indonesian studies, Japanese, Korean, linguistics, literary Chinese, Mongolian, Northeast Asia, Pacific studies, peace and conflict studies, Sanskrit, Southeast Asia, Spanish, Thai, Tok Pisin, Vietnamese, war studies.
For Science: Astronomy and astrophysics, biological anthropology, biology, chemistry, computer science, Earth and marine science, environment, mathematics, medical research, physics, physics of the Earth, population health, psychology, science, science communication, statistics.
Private, public and international sector research, research management, roles in science education, public policy industries, government.
Undertaken in the final year, subject to progress requirements.
The Australian Government pays part of the tuition fee for this course. The remaining balance is paid by the student. Information about ANU student contributions.
Supplementary form: Suitability is determined by the submission and assessment of the B Philosophy supplementary form. Submission of this form is compulsory for all applicants. This additional information should be submitted directly to the university by the deadlines listed on the ANU’s supplementary application form webpage.

Co-Curricular or Service Experience (Year 12 or IB applicants only): The Co-Curricular or Service Experience requirement has been removed from the application process for 2025 admissions. This change will make ANU more accessible to Year 12 students looking to join ANU. You don’t need to submit any additional documents regarding this change.
Subject prerequisites: Some Science subjects require specific knowledge of mathematics, Physics or Chemistry. Access specific subject prerequisites.
Minimum selection rank: 99.00. Due to the competitive nature of our admissions process, we cannot guarantee entry to applicants who meet the minimum selection rank for their preferred program.
