The Bachelor of Nutrition Science prepares students to communicate nutrition science to the public and advise the community about food choices for healthy eating. Nutrition can have a major impact on health, particularly on those diseases which constitute the national health priority areas in Australia including obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, injury prevention and mental health, many of which are preventable through a healthy lifestyle.
This program will focus on general health care, chronic disease management, Indigenous health and other emerging areas of need and students will gain an understanding of the science behind food and nutrition including human physiology and biochemistry, as well as food and culinary nutrition science. Students also have the opportunity to select a minor or major.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health, chronic disease management, culinary nutrition, diet in health and disease, food science, general health care, human biosciences.
National and international health agencies, state and federal government health departments, public health, industry or private practice, food safety and regulation, culinary nutrition, food and nutrition communication and education, as well as research and food product development.
Graduates of this course are eligible to apply for registration as a nutritionist with the Nutrition Society of Australia (NSA).
Two units of workplace learning with an external organisation. Before students begin professional experience for this course, they should review the mandatory state or territory legal and industry policy requirements. Available as an additional year to meritorious students who wish to undertake research training to make a contribution to scholarship and evidence-based nutrition science practice.
