About
Industrial Design is known globally for human-centred product design and design research informing the future of products, design systems and services, in response to modern challenges for people in urban and remote environments.
Industrial designers apply collaborative methods in bringing together diverse stakeholder groups to develop successful strategies for making the world a better place. The course offers subjects in sustainable materials and manufacturing, work integrated learning, design thinking and drawing methods for creativity, design innovation, product design, human factors, design management, engineering documentation, graphic presentation, 3D CAD and virtual environments. This course can lead to multiple career outcomes, including product design innovation, packaging, physical and virtual 3D modelling, prototyping and 3D printing, industrial design engineering, design for sustainability, new product-oriented Start-Up Embedded applied design research methods, in cooperation with many community and industry in-course learning partnerships, are conducted in studio environments. This approach provides students with work-ready skills advantageous to employment opportunities in product, research, and service.
Course code orientation choice includes: 722530 for ‘Design Practice’ Bachelor of Industrial Design and 722535 for ‘Design Research’ Bachelor of Industrial Design Honours.

Advanced design research; Computer Aided Design (CAD) with Advanced Surface Modelling; Design Practice; Design Studio; human centred design (HCD); new product development (NPD); sustainability and circular economy (UNSDGs); user interface design (UX); with specialisations in design practice, technology entrepreneurship, business studies for secondary teaching, construction economics, cultural and social analysis, graphic design, indigenous Australian studies, social ecology, sustainable futures.

New product and service development in teams across areas such as: medical products, furniture, digital wearables, transport, architectural products, building components and manufacturing process design, health and sports equipment, new smart connected products for the Internet of Things (IoT) start-up businesses, human-centred design research, space industries, design for emotion, packaging, or designing for sustainable economies including UNSDG integration for industry, community, or government.
Careers in teaching and education: Successful completion of this course may satisfy the entry requirements to Master of Teaching (Secondary) if you undertake discipline subjects that meet the requirements for your chosen area of teaching.
Professional recognition
Graduates are eligible for professional membership of the Design Institute of Australia.
Practical experience
A compulsory module of industry experience in the student's area of interest can be undertaken within Mentored Practice in Design Innovation. Work integrated learning and practice is a key feature of the course.

Applicants with recent secondary education
Assumed knowledge: Any 2 units of English plus at least two of Design, Design and Technology, Digital Multimedia, Visual Arts, Engineering or Business Studies.

Bachelor of Applied Data Science
Bachelor of Applied Data Science is a cross-disciplinary degree that can be taken in combination with any Western Sydney University bachelor degree.
The course teaches a blend of skills, including mathematics, statistics and computing. Graduates will know how to embark on data-driven investigations, and conduct visual and computational analytics for application in their own primary research.
Expressions of interest in the course will be taken during the UAC application process, and eligible students who have expressed an interest and received an offer to another Western Sydney University course will be invited to join the Bachelor of Applied Data Science.
Bachelor of Entrepreneurship
Bachelor of Entrepreneurship is a cross-disciplinary degree that can be taken with any Western Sydney University bachelor degree.
The program will develop mindset, risk tolerance, creativity, passion, big thinking, team formation and leadership capabilities – the key distinct characteristics of high impact entrepreneurs. In an entrepreneurial ecosystem, students will learn the knowledge and techniques for opportunity discovery, impact analysis, customer analysis, strategic teambuilding and leadership, the psychology and ethics of the start-up, funding modelling and financial analysis, growth and exit strategies.
Expressions of interest in the course will be taken during the UAC application process. Eligible students who express an interest and receive an offer to another Western Sydney University course will be invited to join the Bachelor of Entrepreneurship.
Master of Research
This is an elite research degree available to meritorious students in most undergraduate degrees. As an internationally recognised qualification it will allow students to access global employment opportunities and research education.
