Bachelor of Journalism/Bachelor of International Studies

Step onto a world stage with global opportunities when you study journalism and international studies at UOW. You will learn to appreciate cross-disciplinary and cross-cultural work when you combine a Bachelor of Journalism degree with a Bachelor of International Studies. You can tailor a degree specifically to your interests in the global world of journalism and media as you explore global issues and develop research and communication skills. Learn to effectively research and communicate stories on a global scale as you analyse, appreciate and understand the diversity of the global community. How does modern journalism embrace and leverage converging media? Can we understand our collective global challenges and communicate them more effectively? On completion of this double degree, you will be able to answer these questions and more as you enter a career spanning politics, society, culture, language, and communication.

You'll benefit by learning from recognised and passionate leaders in their fields. You will learn core fundamentals across practical and theoretical subjects in the first year of your double degree before deciding which major disciplines and language to focus on from the second year. You'll be immersed in practical, hands-on learning as part of the UOWTV Multimedia student newsroom, and produce coverage for its website, YouTube channel and social media platforms. You will have real deadlines and will engage with the community and industry as you explore and innovate within journalism’s changing environment, including podcasting, data journalism and immersive video. Throughout this double degree, you will gain hands-on experience and make meaningful professional connections.

Areas of study

For Bachelor of Journalism: Broadcast journalism, photojournalism, print journalism, web-based journalism. For Bachelor of International Studies: Global sustainable development, international relations. All students complete a core of interdisciplinary international studies subjects. You must complete a language minor in one of the following languages: Chinese (Mandarin), French, Japanese, Spanish and one of the above majors.

Career opportunities

For Bachelor of Journalism: Print/television/radio/photo/online journalist, producer, researcher, communication specialist, editor, writer, copywriter, media adviser, careers in public relations and advertising. For Bachelor of International Studies: Diplomat, foreign affairs officer, government policy developer, international business consultant, interpreter, not-for-profit organisation officer, translator, United Nations worker.

Practical experience

Students are part of the UOWTV Multimedia student newsroom, and produce coverage for its website, YouTube channel and social media platforms. Students can also undertake internships as part of the degree and will graduate with a portfolio of work that you can present to future employers and clients.

Honours

If you have a distinction average or higher, you can apply to the honours program which offers an additional year of study to pursue both critical and creative projects. Honours research topics are various and negotiable.
