Bachelor of Journalism/Bachelor of Science

Build your understanding of the natural world and how to effectively and persuasively present information to the world when you study journalism and science at UOW. You will learn to present scientific findings using the skills you develop to be able to analyse and interpret theories and findings while engaging your viewer, listener or reader. Enhancing your educational, academic and professional qualifications, double degrees allow you to gain two degrees at once, minimising both the time commitment and cost of your studies. They also make you more competitive in a crowded job market. On completion of this double degree, you will be able to enter a career as a specialist journalist with hands-on industry knowledge.

You'll benefit by learning from recognised and passionate leaders in their fields. You will learn core fundamentals across practical and theoretical subjects in the first year of your double degree before deciding which major disciplines to focus on from the second year.

You will be immersed in practical, hands-on learning as part of the UOWTV Multimedia student newsroom, and produce coverage for its website, YouTube channel and social media platforms. You will have real deadlines and will engage with the community and industry as you explore and innovate within journalism’s changing environment, including podcasting, data journalism and immersive video. You will also gain practical experience during a legal internship where you will gain highly valued industry experience.

Areas of study

Bachelor of Journalism: Broadcast journalism, photojournalism, print journalism, web-based journalism. Bachelor of Science: Cell and molecular biology, chemistry, earth sciences, and ecology and conservation biology.

Career opportunities

Bachelor of Journalism: Print/television/radio/photo/online journalist, producer, researcher, communication specialist, editor, writer, copywriter, media adviser, careers in public relations and advertising. Bachelor of Science:  Agricultural adviser, biological scientist, biochemist, biotechnologist, chemist, scientific researcher, conservation biologist, ecologist, environmental consultant, forensic scientist, geologist, geochemist, geneticist, immunologist, pathologist.

Practical experience

Bachelor of Journalism: Students are part of the UOWTV Multimedia student newsroom and produce coverage for its website, YouTube channel and social media platforms. Students can also undertake internships as part of the degree and will graduate with a portfolio of work that you can present to future employers and clients. For the Bachelor of Science: students will have extensive opportunities for hands-on learning both within UOW’s modern laboratories, and in the superb marine, freshwater, terrestrial and urban environments of the South Coast and inland regions.
