SAE has a range of approaches to learning and teaching that can be activated to provide flexibility in the face of changing circumstances as required, to support student progression regardless of external factors.
Specially designed in consultation with industry experts from Technicolor and Ubisoft, SAE’s Associate Degree of VFX and Virtual Production will nurture your creativity, empower you to experiment, and enhance your technical skill set.
As a student of VFX and Virtual Production at SAE University College, you’ll learn in small classes with one-on-one mentoring opportunities not often found in larger universities. Guided by our industry experts, you’ll learn to apply theoretical knowledge and current best practices while utilising cutting-edge equipment such as virtual production studios, motion capture suits, high-end digital film cameras and green screens.
Develop in-demand skills in VFX, compositing, real-time engines, procedural graphics, 3D modelling, virtual environments, animation, texturing and shading. In addition to your core units, you’ll choose from a pool of electives to develop a specialisation in one of three areas: Virtual Production, VFX, and Technical Art.
The Associate Degree of VFX and Virtual Production will enhance your career prospects in an ever-evolving industry. You’ll undertake professional work placement opportunities as part of your degree, where you’ll put your technical skills in practice and build your professional network. We’ll also equip you with critical employability skills including strategies for problem-solving, communication and self-promotion.
2D and 3D asset production, cinematography, contextual inquiry, introduction to compositing, introduction to real-time engines, procedural and generative systems, project design and the entrepreneur, real-time VFX, systems and design thinking, VFX compositing and post-production, world building for virtual environments, plus a range of specialist elective units including motion capture, programming foundations and textures and shaders.
Virtual set builder/environment artist, virtual camera operator (VCO), 2D or 3D modeler, texture artist, graphics programmer, storyboard artist, virtual production supervisor, VFX assistant.
Extensive practical hands-on training with industry placed internships. This is the proven and best way for students to develop the skills and experience they need to start a successful career in the creative media industries.

Interview: In addition to applying through UAC, all applicants are required to complete an informal interview, either in person or over the telephone. The interview helps us understand your motivations, discuss your previous study and relevant experience and career goals. Applicants will be contacted to arrange an interview time, and interviews are ongoing throughout the year.
Identification: Applicants are required to upload documentation in their application to show photo identification and proof of citizenship. Accepted forms of identification include a passport, driver's licence, birth certificate and/or citizenship certificate.
SAE courses do not have an ATAR requirement. Refer to the SAE general admission criteria.
