About

Medicinal chemists design and synthesise new medicinal and pharmacological agents, monitor guidelines for testing drugs and analyse drug regulatory affairs, assess patent applications for new drugs, and teach in tertiary institutions.

The Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry (Honours) provides excellent training in the modern techniques of chemical science applied to the development of new diagnostic and therapeutic agents.

During the fourth (Honours) year of this degree, you will undertake a substantial piece of independent research in Medicinal Chemistry, under the supervision of a leading researcher, together with other course work. Participate in practical classes in our purpose-built Sciences Teaching Facility in the Science Precinct of the campus or out in the field, ensuring that you have the skills and knowledge to meet the needs of tomorrow's employers.

On completion you will be ready for a career in the pharmaceutical industry, government agencies (health, agriculture, food and drug administration), or research organisations.

Areas of study

Students will study foundational subjects in chemistry, anatomy, physiology, and biochemistry. Some of the topics you will study include antibiotics, anti-cancer agents, anti-viral agents, and anti-inflammatory agents. You will gain skills in synthesis, spectroscopy, computer modelling, and biological testing.

Career opportunities

Analytical chemist, bioanalytical scientist, biochemist, biomedical researcher, chemist, clinical trial coordinator, drug regulation officer, food chemist, molecular biologist, pharmaceuticals research, quality control chemist, materials scientist, medical researcher, patent officer, synthetic chemist, toxicologist, waste control, pollution regulation.

Professional recognition

The degree structure is designed to meet the qualifying standards of the Royal Australian Chemical Institute. Students who meet the course requirements will be eligible for corporate membership as Chartered Chemists.

Practical experience

The Bachelor of Medicinal Chemistry (Honours) incorporates field and laboratory studies at all levels, providing extensive opportunities for hands-on learning.

Honours

Research project and major thesis in the final stages of the course.

ATAR profile

ATAR-based offers only (semester 1, 2023)

Use all ATAR profile data as a guide only; it provides a broad overview of the ATARs and selection ranks of previous Year 12 students admitted into that course. ATARs and selection ranks required for entry in 2024 may be different. If you are unsure about including a course among your preferences, contact the relevant institution.

  1. This ATAR profile table is in line with Commonwealth Government transparency requirements. It is based on offers to recent school leavers (ie completed Year 12 in the last 2 years) who were selected solely or partly on their ATAR. Note that some institutions further differentiate this information on their websites.
  2. The ATAR values exclude any adjustment factors.
  3. The selection ranks include the ATAR and any adjustment factors.

Abbreviations

– = data is not available.
