About

Support communities as you learn how to design and build livable and sustainable cities using computer technology. You will learn how to create transport and housing systems using your knowledge of how telecommunications networks, the internet and computers are built.

Discover how to ensure ample clean water for the world's population and how to use technology to better understand and help solve the biggest issues facing our natural world. On completion, you will be able to address these challenges and more as you learn the theoretical foundations and practical approaches to computation and engineering to meet the needs of tomorrow's employers.

You will benefit from faculty members who are driving cutting-edge research, providing innovative solutions to global issues. You will learn engineering fundamentals in your first year before deciding which major discipline to focus on from the second year. You will complete an industry placement where you may gain credit for relevant work experience, either in Australia or overseas, by participating in our Professional Options Program. Our engineering degree includes honours-level content integrated throughout the course.

As part of your computer science studies, you will enjoy practical classes set in our fully equipped modern computer labs as you study core subjects across computer science. You will then select a major to focus on as well as develop your own application as part of a team in partnership with industry. Throughout this degree, you will have the opportunity to gain real- world experience and make professional connections.

Areas of study

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours): architectural, biomedical, civil, computer and autonomous systems, electrical and electronics, environmental, materials, mechanical, mechatronic, mining, or telecommunications  engineering and the Internet of Things (IoT). If you are undecided which engineering major you wish to specialise in, UOW's Flexible First Year program of common first-year subjects provides an opportunity to learn about all engineering disciplines and decide your major in the second year. Bachelor of Computer Science: Artificial intelligence and big data, cyber security, digital systems security, game and mobile development, software engineering.

Career opportunities

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours): Architectural engineer, biomedical engineer, civil engineer, computer architect, computer systems, construction manager, electronics engineer, electrical engineer, environmental engineer, geotechnical engineer, materials engineer, mechanical engineer, mechatronic engineer, mining engineer, network engineer, production engineer, security engineer, software engineer, structural engineer, telecommunications engineer, transport engineer, water quality manager.  Bachelor of Computer Science:  AI engineer, analyst, animator, computer engineer, cyber security analyst, data mining & analysis, data scientist, database administrator, electronics engineer, games or app developer, network architect, programmer, security engineer, software engineer user interface designer, web developer for multimedia and service-orientated applications for industries such as marketing, education, research, media providers.

Professional recognition

Bachelor of Engineering (Honours): UOW’s engineering programs are accredited by Engineers Australia and relevant world engineering bodies through the Washington Accord. This ensures recognition by equivalent professional engineering bodies in the USA, UK, Hong Kong, Japan, New Zealand, Canada, South Africa, Ireland, Korea, Malaysia, Singapore and other countries. This recognition ensures that graduates from this course are admitted, on application, to the grade of Graduate Membership of Engineers Australia. The biomedical engineering major will be submitted for accreditation with Engineers Australia. Bachelor of Computer Science: UOW Computer Science degrees are accredited with the Australian Computer Society.

Practical experience

Compulsory 12 weeks of industry experience in one or more settings under the supervision of experienced engineers; optional internships, industry projects and other career-ready learning opportunities.

Honours

In the final stages of the course, students undertake a research component (thesis).

ATAR profile

ATAR-based offers only (semester 1, 2023)

Use all ATAR profile data as a guide only; it provides a broad overview of the ATARs and selection ranks of previous Year 12 students admitted into that course. ATARs and selection ranks required for entry in 2024 may be different. If you are unsure about including a course among your preferences, contact the relevant institution.

  1. This ATAR profile table is in line with Commonwealth Government transparency requirements. It is based on offers to recent school leavers (ie completed Year 12 in the last 2 years) who were selected solely or partly on their ATAR. Note that some institutions further differentiate this information on their websites.
  2. The ATAR values exclude any adjustment factors.
  3. The selection ranks include the ATAR and any adjustment factors.

Abbreviations
