About

Naval Architecture is concerned with the design, building and utilisation of all types of ships and marine vehicles, which include frigates, destroyers, patrol vessels, mine hunters, submarines, trading vessels and non-trading vessels. In taking responsibility for the overall design and integration of systems, Naval architects must be conversant with a wide variety of skills, covering most forms of engineering.

Areas of study

Foundation studies in the engineering sciences, and mechanical engineering in particular, followed in third and fourth years by studies in engineering management, engineering materials, seaworthiness, ship design, ship hydrodynamics, ship resistance and propulsion, ship stability, ship structures.

Career opportunities

Roles in design, construction and the operation of the fleet as the nation builds its sovereign capabilities. This activity in particular will span Defence, government and industry sectors. Naval architecture firms and consultants are also significant employers of naval architects.

UNSW Canberra has opened enrolment in its undergraduate engineering programs to non-Defence students. Applicants must meet the academic requirements to study at UNSW Canberra and apply online through UAC.

Applicants with recent secondary education

Assumed knowledge: Mathematics Advanced, Physics.

Applicants with higher education study

Non-Defence students: UNSW Canberra will accept students who satisfy the requirements of the first two years of a Mechanical Engineering four-year degree program at any Australasian tertiary institution. These students may be admitted to Years 3 and 4 of the program leading to the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Naval Architecture, as long as the courses studied at the other institution are equivalent.

Chief of Defence Force Students Programs for academically gifted students
UNSW Canberra at ADFA offers an exciting range of undergraduate degree options for high-performing students in arts, business, computer and cyber security, engineering, science and technology. Known as the Chief of Defence Force Students Programs (CDFSP), these unique programs have been designed to provide academically gifted students with a rich and challenging educational experience that will develop their critical thinking and research skills.

Entry to these programs will be via invitation on arrival at UNSW Canberra at ADFA. All students enrolling in the CDFSP are expected to maintain a high level of academic performance in order to remain within the program.
