About

The University Preparation Program (UPP) is an enabling program for adults aged 20 and over who either do not possess formal qualifications or whose academic qualifications do not satisfy the minimum entry criteria for admission to UNSW. The program has been designed to assess academic potential and to provide a realistic environment within which students can develop the skills to manage tertiary study effectively.

Satisfactory completion of the UPP does not guarantee admission to any specific program, but can be used as evidence of recent study when applying for admission to the University. Students choose the stream they wish to undertake when they accept their offer and enrol.

ATAR Profile: Some UNSW offers were issued based on the UNSW Gateway Early Conditional Offer Scheme with a lower ATAR entry requirement. Refer to the Admissions Information for a complete ATAR profile by degree.

Areas of study

Academic skills, content-based courses dependent on the stream chosen. Students enrol in one of four streams: business, engineering, humanities, science.

ATAR profile

ATAR-based offers only (semester 1, 2023)

Use all ATAR profile data as a guide only; it provides a broad overview of the ATARs and selection ranks of previous Year 12 students admitted into that course. ATARs and selection ranks required for entry in 2024 may be different. If you are unsure about including a course among your preferences, contact the relevant institution.

  1. This ATAR profile table is in line with Commonwealth Government transparency requirements. It is based on offers to recent school leavers (ie completed Year 12 in the last 2 years) who were selected solely or partly on their ATAR. Note that some institutions further differentiate this information on their websites.
  2. The ATAR values exclude any adjustment factors.
  3. The selection ranks include the ATAR and any adjustment factors.

Course updates
Courses are added and cancelled throughout the admissions year and course details are subject to change. Check the UAC course search regularly.

Double degree options
Double degree options are available in a number of UNSW courses.

Honours at UNSW
Studying honours offers a chance to develop your research and professional skills guided by staff who are passionate about research and the development of new researchers. Honours is an integral component of many UNSW courses or may be offered as an additional year of study to meritorious students.

UNSW enabling courses
UNSW offers a range of enabling courses as pathways to degree-level studies for students who would not otherwise qualify for admission. Four enabling courses are provided for educationally disadvantaged school leavers aged 17–19 years and a separate enabling course is available for post-school applicants aged 20 or above.

If you successfully complete an enabling course and gain admission to a bachelor degree you may be awarded credit for some of the subjects undertaken in your enabling course. Places in UNSW's enabling courses are Commonwealth supported and, unlike bachelor programs, you are not required to pay a student contribution.

For more information, call the Learning Centre on (02) 9385 2060 or email if you are a school leaver aged 17–19 or email if you are an older student.
