About

The Diploma of Counselling and Communication Skills develops your theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to secure employment opportunities in the community sector. You’ll develop an understanding of human behaviour at different stages, behavioural problems and strategies for positive behaviour management, impact of society and culture, and also critically review a range of theories in counselling, relate counselling theory to issues in counselling, develop an ethical approach to counselling and develop skills to assess, and manage and refer clients accordingly.

The Diploma of Counselling and Communication Skills has been designed to prepare you for employment in a role which leverages interpersonal and human-connection skills. Upon graduation, you have the opportunity to begin working in the industry or continue your studies in the Bachelor of Counselling.

With successful completion of this diploma, you can receive credits for the subjects you complete and  gain  entry into the second year of a Bachelor degree.

  • Learn how to evaluate different situations to determine your best approach..
  • Study the core principles of case management.
  • Understand common mental health conditions, behaviours and thought patterns.

Practical experience

After completing this diploma at Torrens, you have the option to upgrade your qualification to a Bachelor of Applied Social Science (Counselling) at Jansen Newman Institute. Students are eligible for membership with the ACA. You can join as a student member, and on completion of the course you can become a provisional member; after 12 months as a provisional member you can become a full level-1 member. It also means you can go onto The Australian Register of Counsellors and Psychotherapists (RCAP). All level-1 members automatically are registered against RCAP.

Work placement hours: 120 hours
