The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) develops your skills to address the diverse academic and developmental needs of young people. You'll gain discipline expertise to teach across all stages of secondary school. You'll have the opportunity to specialise in two of the following disciplines: English, mathematics, humanities (including history, geography and economics), science (including physics, chemistry and biology), physical education (PE), health, visual arts, psychology or special education.
The design of the program reflects the school year, giving you the opportunity to undertake ongoing school experience and integrate your knowledge and skills with practice. You'll complete 80 days of professional experience during the course, equipping you with the practical skills to graduate career ready.
You are also required to complete an externally administered Literacy and Numeracy Test prior to graduation in order to be eligible to apply for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.
Pathways: La Trobe University’s Diploma of Teacher Education or the Associate Degree of Teacher Education provide a pathway option to this course.

Graduates are prepared for work in government and independent schools nationally and overseas (subject to registration).
You'll be prepared for a range of teaching careers in secondary schools, community, non-traditional learning environments, including advisory boards, private organisations, local and state government, and media and service industries.
The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is accredited by the Victorian Institute of Teaching. Professional registration may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practise newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. The placements will immerse you in professional work culture, enabling you to develop and further enhance your skills. Please refer to the La Trobe course website for more information.
CASPer: All applicants must complete the CASPer test to support selection into teaching programs. CASPer is a requirement for many of the initial teacher training courses in Victoria. It is a non-cognitive online test designed to assess an applicant's personal and professional attributes. CASPer test registration and further information.
Literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education: All students completing an initial teacher education course are expected to sit and pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Teachers prior to completing their course.
Working With Children Check: Successful applicants will be required to hold a valid Working With Children Check prior to undertaking professional placements as part of this course. Applications are available at Australia Post or online at the Working With Children website.

One of English Standard, English Advanced (Band 3), English as an Additional Language or Dialect (Band 4) plus any 2 units of mathematics.
Minimum selection rank (ATAR + adjustments): 70.00. If applicable, this includes adjustment factors related to adjustments and EAS.
Subject adjustments: Applicants who successfully complete one of the following HSC or equivalent Year 12 subjects will have their selection rank increased by one point per study: Performance Band 3 in English Standard or English Advanced, Mathematics General 2, Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2, any science, humanities or any language other than English subject. Performance Band 4 in English as an Additional Language or Dialect. Overall, selection ranks can be increased by a maximum of five points.
Subject proficiency: Demonstrated proficiency equivalent to stated Year 12 prerequisites.
