About

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) allows you to specialise in areas such as science, technology, engineering, arts and maths (STEAM), English, humanities/arts, health, physical education, or special education.

You'll build abilities in diagnostic learning and special needs while developing your relationship skills. Please note that not all specialisations are available at all campuses. The foundation year of the course allows you to build strong knowledge around professional literacy and numeracy, with awareness of contemporary approaches to learning.

You are also required to complete an externally administered Literacy and Numeracy Test prior to graduation in order to be eligible to apply for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching.

Pathways: La Trobe University’s Diploma of Teacher Education or the Associate Degree of Teacher Education provide a pathway option to this course.

Practical experience

During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practise newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. Essential requirements for admission

CASPer: All applicants must complete the CASPer test to support selection into teaching programs. CASPer is a requirement for many of the initial teacher training courses in Victoria. It is a non-cognitive online test designed to assess an applicant's personal and professional attributes. CASPer test registration and further information.

Working With Children Check: Successful applicants will be required to hold a valid Working With Children Check prior to undertaking professional placements as part of this course.

Literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education: All students completing an initial teacher education course are expected to sit and pass the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Teachers prior to completing their course.

Prerequisites

One of English Standard, English Advanced (Band 3), English as an Additional Language or Dialect (Band 4) plus any 2 units of mathematics.

Admission criteria

Applicants with recent secondary education

Minimum ATAR including selection adjustments: The minimum selection rank for this course, is equivalent to an ATAR of 70.00. If applicable, this includes adjustment factors related to subject adjustments and EAS.

Subject adjustments: Applicants who successfully complete one of the following HSC or equivalent Year 12 subjects will have their selection rank increased by one point per study: Performance Band 4 in English Standard or English Advanced: Performance Band 3 Mathematics General 2, Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1, Mathematics Extension 2, humanities or any language other than English subjects. Overall, selection ranks can be increased by a maximum of five points.
