About

By studying this innovative degree, you will meet the national accreditation requirements of the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership and can choose to be equipped to teach in either primary or secondary settings. You can also complete your degree in just three and a half years, giving you a head start in your teaching career.

In your foundation first year, you’ll be equipped with a thorough understanding of fundamental teaching principles from a global perspective, with a focus on digital learning. You’ll then select a major in either primary or secondary education, with the option to study a double major. Griffith is the only Queensland university that gives you the freedom to choose your major in your second year. You’ll also undertake professional practice, which includes observation and participation in schools, practice teaching, internships and community field studies every year as part of your studies, ensuring you graduate with a wealth of practical experience and networks.

Note: Students study over three trimesters each year, completing the program in 3.5 years. Students may choose to study this program part-time. A Suitability Card is required. All courses in the Primary Health and Physical Education major except 4082EDN Specialist Planning in Health and Physical Education are also offered online.

Essential requirements for admission

Teaching questionnaire: As part of the non-academic entry requirement, applicants must complete the Teaching Questionnaire, which includes four questions about their motivation and suitability for teaching. How to complete the teaching questionnaire.

Check the special requirements and policies for this course.

Prerequisites

Any 2 units of English (Band 3), excluding English Studies, plus one of Mathematics Standard 2, Mathematics Advanced, Mathematics Extension 1 or Mathematics Extension 2 (Band 3) plus non-academic entry requirements.

Primary teaching: Students selecting primary education from Year 2 need to have completed any 2 units of science (Band 3). Students undertaking an initial teacher education program will need to successfully complete the National Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE) to graduate from the program. Students are permitted three test attempts in total for each component. If students fail three test attempts for each component, they will not be able to graduate.

Previous education studies: Successful completion of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) is not an entry requirement for this program. However, if you have achieved a 'satisfactory' result for one or more component of the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education (LANTITE) at another institution, the 'satisfactory' result can be carried across with your program application. You are not eligible to apply for a place in the program if one or more component of LANTITE remains at 'unsatisfactory' after two test attempts for that component. Griffith University does not support reset of LANTITE test attempts.

Secondary teaching: Students select teaching areas that they have successfully studied (at Band 3) in their senior schooling. For the mathematics teaching area: Mathematics Advanced or Mathematics Extension 1 or Mathematics Extension 2. For biology, chemistry or physics teaching areas: Biology, Chemistry or Physics respectively.
