About

Develop knowledge and skills in animal production, management and welfare across a range of domestic and wildlife animal species with the Bachelor of Animal Science from Charles Sturt University.   

The first three years include a rigorous laboratory and field-based science program including fundamental study of anatomy, physiology, animal nutrition, behavior, welfare, genetics and reproduction to provide a solid foundation for a future career working with animals and in the animal industries In the final year, students select from either restricted electives based on your interests or, if a high achiever, there is the option of undertaking an Honours research project and dissertation on a topic that interests you.

This course also focuses on contemporary, relevant and practical issues that influence animal management and production, so that you have knowledge of the major biophysical, environmental, economic, social and policy drivers that underpin Animal Science.

Areas of study

Charles Sturt University's Bachelor of Animal Science provides a broad foundation in biological sciences, research skills and animal health, welfare, behaviour, nutrition, genetics, breeding and management/husbandry. You can tailor your animal science degree to your interests and career goals. In addition to the general animal science option, study streams are also available in animal production and management, or wildlife conservation and management. 

Career opportunities

Animal production/conservation consultant, extension or field officer, research scientist, research officer, technical adviser in animal health or nutrition companies, animal welfare officer, wildlife ecologist, zookeeper, manager of livestock production or breeding enterprises, policy and regulatory affairs concerning animal therapeutics or disease control, biomedical scientist. Animal scientists work in all parts of the world, from the field to research laboratories, and with all types of animals from pets to farm animals and wildlife.

Practical experience

30 days mandatory workplace learning/practical industry experience outside the university during university vacation periods.

Honours

An integrated honours program is available for high achieving students in the fourth (final) year of study.

Essential requirements for admission

Q Fever vaccination: Q Fever vaccinations are compulsory; vaccination clinics will be arranged on campus during first year.

Orientation Week, prior to the start of session 1, includes compulsory activities.
