The fully accredited Bachelor of Oral Health (Therapy and Hygiene) from Charles Sturt University qualifies you to work as an oral health therapist in Australia. As a graduate, you'll help combat the national chronic shortage of oral health professionals, while also making a valuable contribution to the health of your community. 

Oral health practitioners are skilled clinicians who examine and treat diseases of periodontal tissues and teeth. They perform restorative and periodontal care with a primary focus on early diagnosis and treatment. Their role includes the promotion of positive oral health and preventive dental practices in the community. 

Develop your practical skills in our state-of-the-art simulation clinic, dental technology/clinical support laboratory, biodental science learning suite and anatomy teaching facilities. 

Qualified dental therapists are clinicians who examine and treat diseases of the teeth in children, adolescents and young adults. Students are required to purchase dental equipment and instrument kits.

Practical experience

Clinical practice sessions using state-of-the-art simulation and clinic equipment in purpose-built facilities. Students will also attend clinical placements at Charles Sturt University clinics at Albury–Wodonga, Bathurst, Dubbo and Orange. Some placement may also be outside NSW. Travel, accommodation and related expenses for these professional placements will be the responsibility of the student.

Essential requirements for admission

Note: Special requirements and policies apply.

  • A completed High School Certificate with a minimum ATAR of 70 (including adjustment factors) or equivalent.  or; 
  • Charles Sturt Undergraduate Certificate of Health Studies with a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 4.0 or; 
  • Charles Sturt Diploma of General Studies OR Charles Sturt Undergraduate Certificate in University Preparation (with a minimum GPA of 4.0)  or;   
  • Successful completion of the Charles Sturt University Connections – First Nations Direct Entry Program or; 
  • Successful completion of two university level subjects (AQF level Associate Degree or higher), gaining a minimum GPA of 4.0. 

Successful applicants are encouraged to obtain a senior first aid certificate prior to commencing the course. 

Prior to commencement of the first placement, students will also be required to provide evidence of their immunisation and vaccination status, and a completed Working with Children Check. 

Note: Students will be required to purchase instruments at the beginning of Years 1 and 2 of this course. The approx. cost of these instruments is $2000 (Yr 1) and $1500 (Yr 2). There may also be some contingency simulation costs incurred throughout the course under certain circumstances (e.g. replacement teeth, damaged equipment replacement).

Assumed knowledge: English Standard, Chemistry.

Recommended studies: Biology.

Minimum selection rank: 70.00 (including adjustment factors).
