About

The Bachelor of Nutrition and Bachelor of Science (Psychology) aims to develop your professional skills related to the practice of nutrition and dietetics to influence the management of medical conditions and enhance general wellbeing through nutritional intervention and dietary changes. Throughout this course, you will develop a high level of technical and evaluative skill so you can assess and implement recommendations for best practice in nutrition and dietetics. You will develop advanced skills and knowledge in nutritional biochemistry, nutritional physiology, food science, nutritional assessment, medical nutrition therapy, public health nutrition and food service. These skillsets can be applied in the nutrition and dietetics workplace through industry or clinical placement. The course also aims to develop high-level communication skills so that you can interact positively with patients, other health professionals or members of the community.

You can commence the course online and study remotely. However, you will need to attend the North Rockhampton campus for residential schools for four days in year 2 and one day in year 3 during the Bachelor of Nutrition component, and attend compulsory weekly activities on-campus for two terms in duration during the Master of Nutrition and Dietetics component of the course.

Note that CQUniversity is applying for Program Qualification from the Dietitians Australia (DA) and delivery of this course will be subject to accreditation outcomes from the DA.

Career opportunities

A dietitian is a health professional who contributes towards the promotion of health and the prevention and treatment of illness by optimising the nutrition of populations, communities and individuals. Dietitians have a defined and recognisable body of knowledge and utilise scientific principles and methods in the study of nutrition and dietetics, applying these results to influence the wider environment affecting food intake and eating behaviour. The scope of dietetic practice is such that dietitians may work in a variety of settings and have a variety of work functions.

Practical experience

You will complete four work-integrated learning units that will see you engaged in placement for a minimum of 20 working days in a range of food service providers to practice the fundamental skills; a minimum of 20 working days in acute and ambulatory care settings for the management of complex acute and chronic diseases; a minimum of 30 working days in a government or non-government organisation in the community to practice the fundamental skills of public health nutrition; and in introductory placement for a minimum of 10 working days in a range of healthcare settings to practice the fundamental skills.
