About

The Bachelor of Secondary Education (Science) provides graduates with the qualification to apply for graduate teacher registration and work as a Secondary school teacher upon graduation across the country. Registered Secondary teachers are professionals that are equipped with the knowledge and skills to teach young people in school settings from Year 7 to Year 12. This course was introduced in 2016 and was designed to bring together theory and practice through a school-based clinical model of teacher education that includes both instructional/theoretical and practical/applied components. The course incorporates school-based clinics for two Science, Technology/Engineering or Mathematics (STeM) discipline areas in the Australian curriculum. In addition, this course also includes a minimum of 80 days of embedded professional experience placements in each of the four years of the degree. Strong partnerships with the ACT Education Directorate, Catholic and Independent schools in Canberra enable the Faculty of Education to deliver the school-based clinics, as well as develop capacity for teachers as researchers. Our course is taught by academics who, in the main, were teachers before moving to academia, along with current teachers who are completing either a PhD or EdD. Our teaching is informed by research giving students both current and evidence-based instruction.
