Answering questions in the application

Throughout the application you'll be asked questions about your ES eligibility.

To ensure you answer each question correctly it is important that you:

  • complete all questions in CAPS LOCK, including your email address
  • select the Next button when you've finished each question
  • include accurate details of whether you're a UAC applicant for admission; and/or applying directly to an institution for admission and/or a continuing student who is currently enrolled at an institution. If you don't provide accurate information for one of these options your application may not be assessed.

When you've completed all the questions you'll receive an application summary. Read this carefully and make any changes using the Edit buttons before you submit your application.

Sample questions

The following are examples of the questions you'll be asked while completing the application. If you answer ‘no’, you'll be moved to the next question. You can also read about How to apply for ES.

Are you an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander?

If you are you an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander and you are NOT currently receiving ABSTUDY or the ABSTUDY Pensioner Educational supplement and you are not providing your Centrelink CRN on your application, you'll need to supply a declaration – Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander when you apply.

If you are currently receiving ABSTUDY or the ABSTUDY Pensioner Education supplement, you are not required to supply any documentation to verify your Aboriginality.

Do you believe you meet the criteria for consideration of exceptional financial hardship?

If you believe you meet these criteria and you are NOT currently receiving a means-tested Centrelink (or other Commonwealth) income support payment, you'll need to supply documentation for exceptional financial hardship.

Do you believe you meet the eligibility requirements for a regional or remote disadvantage?

You'll need to supply documentation, dependent upon your circumstances regional or remote disadvantage.

Do you have carer responsibilities?

If you have carer responsibilities and you are NOT currently receiving a Carer Payment or Carer Allowance, you'll need to supply the following carer responsibilities documentation.

If you are currently receiving a Carer Payment or Carer Allowance and you are providing your Centrelink CRN on your application, you are not required to supply any documentation to verify your carer responsibilities.

Are you a sole parent?

If you are a sole parent and you are NOT currently receiving a Parenting Payment – single, you'll need to supply the following sole parent responsibilities documentation.

If you are currently receiving a Parenting Payment – single and you are providing your Centrelink CRN on your application, you are not required to supply any documentation to verify your sole parent responsibilities.

Will your English language difficulties resulting from your non-English speaking background affect your ability to study?

You'll need to supply documentation, dependent upon your circumstances.

Is your ability to study affected, or is it likely to be affected, by the long-term and ongoing effects of: your severe, long-term or recurrent medical/psychiatric condition or illness OR your learning, sensory, physical, psychological or other disability/disorder OR abuse?

Did you enter Australia as a refugee or on a Global Special Humanitarian Visa (subclass 202)?

You'll need to provide refugee status documentation.
